Ancient Mariners have been quick to respond to my note about the Combined Service rugby dinner, when some Naval officers stood for the Loyal Toast and others followed tradition and remained in their seats.
Cdr Peter Meryon recalls a dinner 35 years ago on the Joint Services staff course at Latimer. Commonwealth officers and civilians were present, so it was agreed that everyone would stand for the Loyal Toast. But when the moment came, an Australian Commander stood on his head through the National Anthem. Afterwards he rebounded to his feet, explaining: “That’s how we do it Down Under.”
